You've bought a printable and you have the files. Now what? Printing digital wall art is easier than it looks, and getting it right is mostly about picking the right file for your frame. This guide walks through sizes, paper, printing options and framing, so your prints look as good on the wall as they do on screen.
It's tempting to print first and shop for a frame later, but it works much better the other way around. Decide where the art will go and what size frame fits the space, then choose the matching file. Common frame sizes in the US are 5x7, 8x10, 11x14, 16x20 and 18x24 in. Outside the US, A4, A3 and 50x70 cm are common.
Every frame has an aspect ratio, the relationship between its width and height. If you print a file in the wrong ratio, it gets cropped or leaves awkward white edges. Sage Bloom Haven wall art sets (like the Sage Green Nursery Gallery Wall or Boho Christmas Tree Print Set) include five ratio files at 300 DPI:
Each download also includes a printable size guide (PDF) that shows which file to use for each frame size. When in doubt, check that first.
Most home inkjets handle up to 8.5x11 in (or A4) well. For the best results:
For larger sizes, take the files to a local shop like Staples, Office Depot, FedEx, Walgreens or Costco. Ask for matte photo paper or cardstock and tell them not to resize or crop. Turnaround and pricing vary by store, so it's worth calling ahead.
Labs like Mpix, Shutterfly and Printique offer high-quality prints with more paper options, shipped to your door. Upload the file that matches your ratio and order the exact size. Just allow time for shipping, especially before the holidays.
A common guideline is to hang art so its center sits around 57–60 in (145–152 cm) from the floor. Above furniture, leave about 6–10 in between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame. For a gallery wall, keep a consistent 2–3 in gap between frames. Paper templates taped to the wall help you plan the layout before you put any holes in it.
